Get Started

Nicole Beatty, CFRE, has served the fundraising and nonprofit community for more than two decades and has held the CFRE credential for more than 15 years.

During that time, she’s raised more than $30M, launched nonprofits, registered dozens of charities, served on boards, and trained hundreds of community leaders. Nicole has supported organizations through revenue growth and built frameworks that help leaders shift from survival mode to sustainable growth.

Based in Ontario, Canada, she’s currently the CEO & Chief Community Builder of her own consultancy, Capacity for Community. The organization assists social entrepreneurs, non-profit practitioners, and community leaders to build capacity, design innovative solutions, engage their communities, and level-up their skills and resources, so they can advance their missions.

Nicole is also the Founder & Executive Director of Local Food for Local Good, an organization that coordinates local, sustainable food programs and systems that advocates for the accessibility and affordability of healthy food for everyone.

Building Relationships, Trust, and Shared Commitment

I believe resource development is far more than fundraising. At its best, it’s about building relationships, trust, and shared commitment between communities and the causes that strengthen them. It’s the work that connects generosity to impact and ensures organizations have the resources they need to serve people with dignity and purpose.

I guide organizations through practical strategic planning processes that clarify priorities, align leadership and resources, and focus efforts on the areas of greatest impact. When strategy, governance, and revenue development are working together, organizations are better equipped to adapt to change, respond to community needs, and sustain their work over the long term.

My approach to all of this is rooted in helping nonprofits build strong, sustainable foundations. I teach them to develop balanced revenue ecosystems that reduce risk by diversifying funding across traditional streams and earned income, while ensuring those strategies align with their mission and capacity.

Sometimes, the Mission Chooses You

Like many people in our sector, I found my way into fundraising somewhat unexpectedly. While volunteering with a charity during university, I was offered a position and chose to step into the role rather than continue with a postgrad. From there, my career grew into international development and healthcare philanthropy, and by my mid-20s I had started my first nonprofit.

Over time, I was exposed to the social enterprise model while working overseas, which broadened my understanding of how organizations can create impact and sustainability. That experience eventually led me into consulting. When I moved back to my small hometown, I wanted to continue supporting and coaching organizations, so I launched my own consulting firm.

I earned my CFRE while living in Australia, where, at the time, I was among the youngest practitioners to achieve the designation. This accreditation provided me with value and credibility as I transitioned from in-house roles to consultancy, helping to establish trust with clients and position myself as a knowledgeable and experienced fundraising professional.

Stewarding Investments to Serve the Community

Holding my CFRE played an important role in securing a multi-million dollar gift from a major funder. During the cultivation process, the donor asked about the designation and was pleased to learn that a professional standard for fundraising exists within the sector. That recognition helped build confidence in both my expertise and the organization’s ability to responsibly steward their investment.

It took approximately 18 months of intentional cultivation and relationship building. During that time, I focused on doing the work behind the vision, demonstrating the impact of the project, and building trust through ongoing engagement, transparency, and a shared commitment to the cause. I championed the capital project throughout the process, ensuring the donor understood both the community need and the long-term impact their investment would create. The funds ultimately supported the capital development of the project, enabling the organization to expand its infrastructure and significantly increase its capacity to serve the community.

From Grassroots to a Sustainable Nonprofit

My greatest success is the work I’ve been able to do in my own community, where I was born and raised and later returned after time away for school, work, and international experience. Over the past decade, I’ve co-founded four nonprofits, charities, and social enterprises alongside friends from high school. What makes this especially rewarding is that these organizations have grown beyond their founding teams.

New board members and leaders have stepped in to carry the vision forward, and I’ve been able to support that transition through mentorship, governance development, and succession planning.

Watching grassroots ideas evolve into sustainable, community-powered organizations has been incredibly fulfilling and reinforces my belief that strong community leadership and capacity building can create lasting impact.

The Pursuit of Real-world Impact

Those who pursue this work have chosen a career in an important and impactful sector, and should be proud of that. Earning the CFRE reflects that commitment. One of the best study tools is the experience and knowledge gained through daily work.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a sector that brings me both pride and purpose. Resource development is an integrated discipline that blends strategy, storytelling, relationship building, and impact. Looking back, the decision I made twenty years ago to step into this field is one I have never once regretted.
